Ravenna and Emilia Romagna

RAVENNA & EMILIA ROMAGNA                                             10 days
 
 
Day 1:
Arrival of the group in the surroundings of the GARDA LAKE, accommodation in hotel, dinner and overnight.
 
Day 2:
After breakfast, departure to BOLOGNA. Accommodation in hotel, dinner and overnight.
 
Day 3:
After breakfast, departure for a full day excursion to SANTARCANGELO di ROMAGNA, medieval village concentrated around its beautiful Fortress which can be reached by ascending along the tiny streets that open onto wide panoramas of the Riviera below. Then continuation to SAN LEO, whose Castle was built on a cliff, considered to be impenetrable: from the entrance of the town you can admire the Square with the Romanic Pieve (parish church), the Dom and the Rock. Then to the REPUBBLICA di SAN MARINO, little republic on the borders between the Emilia Romagna and the Marche regions, few kilometres far from the Adriatic Riviera and with a rich patrimony in architectonic properties among monuments, ancient squares, palaces, museums, churches and medieval houses located within its Walls. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.
 
Day 4:
After breakfast, departure to RAVENNA for a full day guided tour with a strolling around the centre with the Mausoleum of Galla Placida whose interior is covered with mosaics, the Ortodox Baptistery (5th century), the Archiepiscopal Museum housing the renowned 6th century ivory throne, the Gothic basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo and the Arian Baptistery (early 6th century), the two splendid Byzantine churches of San Vitale and Sant’Apollinare in Classe (6th century) and the recently discovered (6th C.) Floor mosaics of the House of Stone Carpets. Then a short trip to the basilica of S. Apollinare in Classe dedicated to the patron saint of Ravenna, just 4 km. away to end up with the tomb of Dante Alighieri, Italy’s most distinguished poet who died in 1321. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.
 
Day 5:
After breakfast, departure for a half day guided excursion to PESARO, overlooking the Adriatic Sea, an important tourist centre thanks to its beaches, its monuments and to the fact that is the country of the famous composer Gioacchino Rossini, whose museum-house is possible to visit and to whom the conservatory and the theatre are dedicated. Then continuation to URBINO and guided visit of the town with the Palazzo Ducale, splendid medieval court and one of the best examples of the Italian Renaissance architecture in which the National Gallery of Region Marche has its seats. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.
 
Day 6:
After breakfast, departure for a half-day guided excursion to FAENZA worldwide famous for its ceramics, whose production in the different epochs till nowadays is shown in the International Museum of Ceramic and continuation to BRISIGHELLA, little medieval town not far away from Faenza. Nestling at the foot of three rocky peaks, crowned by three 15th century fortresses, Brisighella has lost none of the charm of the old medieval village it once was. Evoking that age is the main thoroughfare Via degli Asini a raised street flanked by porticoes. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.
 
Day 7:
After breakfast, departure for a full day guided excursion to COMACCHIO, whose lagoon origins are still very clear due to the bridges and channels that cross the town, POMPOSA whose Abbey was one of the most prosperous and potent of northern Italy, then FERRARA, the Renaissance City of the Estense family with the Este Castle, the Romanesque Cathedral and the Renaissance Walls. Important in this town if is the visit of the Schifanoia Palace with valuable paintings. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.
 
Day 8:
Departure for a full guided excursion in BOLOGNA with Piazza Maggiore, the heart of the old city famous for the beautiful Fountain of Neptune by Giambologna (sixteenth century), overlooked by the major buildings of the civil and religious power: the Basilica of San Petronio,  which houses works of the greatest Italian artists of all ages, built in the XIV century and whose façade has not been finished, Palazzo del Comune, today the site of some important cultural institutions like the Museo Morandi, where the works of the great master are well preserved, Palazzo del Podestà characterized by the Tower and the so-called dell'Arengo Voltone del Podestà, that is a large porch which is decorated with statues of the four protectors of Bologna, San Petronio, Saint Procolo, St. Dominic and St. Francis and Palazzo di Re Enzo to end with the Medieval market and the monumental Benedictine Complex of Santo Stefano, born from the joining of courtyards and arcades of seven churches and chapels, which is one of the best preserved Romanesque buildings of the city and place of great artistic value. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.
 
Day 9:
After breakfast, departure to the GARDA LAKE. Accommodation in hotel, dinner and overnight.
